How Cruising Started

Posted by admin in Cruises | Leave a comment

The cruising industry really started in 1921 when the United States passed the Immigration Act. Up to this year, the main job of steamships was for transportation. It was all about getting from point A to point B.

How Cruising Started

They had different classes and levels of service. If you were poor, you travelled steerage while the rich travelled in extravagance.

When the Immigration Act was passed, the ships that were being used for utilitarian purposes needed to be used for other revenue possibilities. This was how ‘Cruising’ came into existence.

Having to make up for the loss of millions of dollars in income the shipping companies shifted to pleasure.

The Golden Age of Cruising was actually kick-started by Prohibition. Liquor was banned in the United States and the only way to booze it up was by taking a steamship to another country or sneaking into an illegal speak-easy. Mainly because of the fact that once ships were outside territorial waters, passengers could drink alcohol and legally gamble without worry of breaking the law.

The introduction of jet transport across the Atlantic hit the shipping lines hard. The industry had to wait until the 1970’s to see real growth and the birth of the modern cruise ship experience.

Mexico Cruises

Mexico is is a wonderful place to cruise. There are three itineraries that you can choose.

3-4 Day round trip from Los Angeles or San Diego to Ensenada. Ensenada is a fun place to party and shop. Another advantage of this trip is the fact that you can get low cost prescription medications and minor surgeries in Mexico that are much less costly than in the US.

The second most popular itinerary is the Southern California (L.A. or San Diego) to Acapulco. This is a great trip that gives you a fantastic variety of the Mexican culture.

You will stop at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta (PV) and Acapulco.

The third itinerary includes all the above and adds a passage thru the Panama Canal and additional ports on the Caribbean side.

No other place offers the stunning natural vistas like a Birthday Cruise to Alaska. Depart on a cruise to Alaska from the ports of San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver BC, and Victoria.

The most efficient way to see Alaska is by ship. Most residents of Alaska live within 50 miles of the ocean.

The Alaska cruising season goes from May through early October. If you are a person who doesn’t like taking the same route twice, then perhaps taking a one way cruise is more your style.

You can start the cruise at the top in Anchorage or at the bottom from Seattle or Vancouver BC.

You will get to see the same ports as the Inland Passage: Sitka, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Ketchikan.

If you travel from the bottom to the top, you can even take an excursion from Anchorage that enables you to view Alaska by rail on train that goes nearly 360 miles to Fairbanks.

There are two predominate cruise itineraries: the Inside Passage and the one-way cruise.
